Winter Weather: Airlines Waiving Change Fees in Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA -- A wintry blast making its way across the Southeast, including Atlanta, may cause havoc with your travel plans, but the airline industry is doing what it can to make things right.

Winter weather advisories are in effect across large swaths of the South as winter storm Helena is poised to bring rain, snow -- and travel armageddon -- to the region this weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for north and central Georgia, including metro Atlanta, as the likelihood of snow and freezing rain continues to increase for Friday evening and Saturday.

Delta Airlines

Delta Airlines is offering refunds to fliers who cancel their trip due to flight cancellation or delay that takes more than 90 minutes, the company said on its website.

If you wish to cancel your trip as a result of a flight cancellation or significant delay (90 minutes or more), you are entitled to a refund for the unused portion of your ticket.

The airline is allowing its customers to make a one-time change to their travel arrangements without charge if they are flying to, from or through Atlanta and other cities. See the list of cities here.

United Airlines

United Airlines on Thursday is offering travel waivers, which permit fliers to change to alternate flights without paying a change fee, for flights affected by the inclement weather. Atlanta is one of many cities on the waiver list.

American Airlines

In response to severe weather in the Western United States, American Airlines said that passengers scheduled to fly Thursday may be able to make changes to their flights for free. See the list of cities, including Atlanta, that are affected.

Southwest Airlines

Southwest Airlines said Thursday that customers with reservations on Friday or Saturday will be allowed to rebook in their original class of service or travel standby without paying a fee. Atlanta and six other cities are on the impacted list.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch this week for parts of Georgia, including metro Atlanta, as the likelihood of snow or a wintry mix looks to increase for Friday evening into Saturday.
