It's no secret that the same old wall colors paired with last season's decor trends can make our homes feel a bit dull after a while. But since it's a new year, that means a new design scheme, right?

According to Atlanta-based interior designer and lifestyle blogger Brittany Hayes, the answer is yes — well, kind of. While the design expert believes that there's always an excuse for revamping your living space, she also explains that it doesn't always require a complete overhaul.

"Paint is always the easiest and least expensive upgrade," says Hayes. "From there I would say cabinet hardware and lighting. Those three things alone can almost completely makeover any bathroom or kitchen."

Throughout 2019, Hayes expects to see more alluring textures and vibrant pops of color fill rooms— which is exactly what you'll notice is incorporated into the whimsical layouts of her very own wonderland dream home.

Hayes was kind enough to let us pick her brain when it comes to freshening up our dwellings, but that's not all: The design guru also gave us an inside look at her own playful and stylish abode, which we highly recommend you take some inspiration from.

What are some design elements you’re hoping to incorporate into your work in 2019?

In 2019, I am shooting for more texture! Texture plays such an important role in design and I always feel like it’s the one element that keeps my designs from looking overdone or “cheesy.”

On the other hand, are there any trends or design elements you’d like to see less of (or none of!) in the new year?

Gosh, I think I just always hope that neutral everything becomes a little boring for everyone. Selfishly, of course, since I love color so much. Neutral always has a place in design, but bringing back pops of color would be my hope.

What are some easy interior upgrades that can give someone’s whole home a fresh feel?

Paint is always the easiest and least expensive upgrade! From there I would say cabinet hardware and lighting. Those three things alone can almost completely makeover any bathroom or kitchen.

When giving a room in your home a refresh, what’s one product or piece that’s always worth the investment?

Lighting is ALWAYS worth the investment! I love a good light fixture and I feel like it can totally make or break a space. I remember when I first started posting pictures of our 1905 home renovation and all that was done in each room was lighting and the pictures went nuts.

On the flip side, where is one area where you can spend less and still make an impact?

Accessories! I always say to splurge on the bigger pieces and then hit up HomeGoods for the rest.

How has the city of Atlanta influenced your design style?

Beautiful old Southern style. My favorite things ever are all of these older homes that have wallpaper everywhere. Although it’s outdated now, they just feel so warm and inviting and I love that so much color and pattern was used so long ago.

Where have you recently been seeking inspiration when designing a home?

In all honesty, I try really hard to just do my own thing and not try and “copycat” or draw too much inspiration elsewhere. I think it’s easy to lose yourself in what everyone else is doing and I try really hard not to do that.

What are your favorite under-the-radar design shops in Atlanta?

I wish I could say I hit up Atlanta often but I honestly never have the time! I am such an online shopper but I always love a good Atlanta Decorative Arts Center trip. Particularly for wallpaper.
