Atlanta Attorney On Trump's Call To Raffensperger Resigns
An Atlanta attorney, Alex Kaufman, was on the phone call between Trump and Raffensperger on Jan. 2. He resigned from his law firm Thursday.
ATLANTA, GA — An Atlanta attorney who was on the Jan. 2 phone call between President Donald Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger resigned from his law firm late Thursday, after he was identified as the third attorney mentioned in the call.
The attorney, Alex Kaufman, as well as his father, Robert Kaufman, resigned from the Fox Rothschild law firm on Jan. 7 to "pursue new professional opportunities," the law firm said in a statement to Above the Law news outlet. Both Alex and Robert joined the law firm in December 2019.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Kaufman ran as a Republican twice — and lost — against Democrat Josh McLaurin to represent a Sandy Springs-based Georgia House district. He promoted himself as a conservative who is loyal to Trump.

The people on the hour-long phone call included Trump, his lawyers — Cleta Mitchell, who also resigned from law firm Foley & Lardner Tuesday, CNN reports; Kaufman; and Kurt Hilbert, a Roswell attorney at Hilbert Law — White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows as well as several aides. But on the call, Kaufman was only referred to as "Alex," and he never spoke during the call.
Above the Law reported Thursday that Kaufman was on the call, and the statement from Fox Rothschild confirmed this in the statement to the news outlet.

"Neither Alex Kaufman nor Fox Rothschild represent or have ever represented the President or his campaign," the statement reads. "Kaufman was not acting as a Fox Rothschild attorney when he was present for, but did not speak on, the Jan. 2 call among President Trump and others."
Kaufman is the general counsel for the Fulton County GOP and the Georgia GOP 6th Congressional District. It was not clear why he was on the call.
"Alex B. Kaufman and Robert J. Kaufman, both partners in the Atlanta office, reached a mutual agreement with Fox Rothschild LLP today to depart from the firm and pursue new professional opportunities," the law firm's statement on Thursday reads. "As a national law firm, we are non-partisan, and we do not represent either President Trump or President-elect [Joe] Biden."
