Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:
- Atlanta students are studying abroad for college education to receive more resources for free. According to the Institute of International Education, over 40,000 U.S. citizens have studied aboard since 2010. Atlanta siblings Rylie and Ellis Hutchinson chose to study abroad where the tuition matched the University of Georgia's, but the siblings don't have to pay for books, housing, meal plans, permits, and get free universal health care. - Ex-Atlanta Police officer James Burns was in court yesterday after a year of no movement in the case. Burns is charged with the murder of Caine Rogers after shooting him as a police officer in 2016. The case was paused as legal proceedings decided whether the indictment should be thrown out. A motions hearing has been set for Jan. 27, 2023. (11Alive.com WXIA)
- The Atlanta Police Department is asking for the community's help in identifying a man in video footage from a Ring camera. A woman called the police after a man was seen prowling around her home at the 1600 block of Waysome Way Northwest. She also noticed damage police believe was an attempt to make a forced entry at the back of her house. Officers searched the area for the suspect with no luck. See if you recognize the suspect at the link. (WSB Atlanta)
- Atlanta United soccer player Miles Robinson was arrested over the weekend at the Battery Atlanta. The U.S. Men's Soccer Team star is accused of misdemeanor theft at the Atlanta Braves stadium. Atlanta United released a statement saying they were aware of the arrest but would not comment further until they gather all information on the incident. (WSB Atlanta)
- Non-profit Communities in Schools Atlanta is helping Atlanta students finish high school after the pandemic implemented an increase in remote learning. The re-engagement coordinator at Cross Keys High School in DeKalb County says over 170 students qualify for the program which provides guidance to students. “It is about removing their external barriers so [students] can focus on school,” says Catalina Valdez.
