Atlanta Falcons, Devonta Freeman Agree To 5-Year Contract

The Atlanta Falcons have re-signed Devonta Freeman to a five-year contract, the team announced Wednesday morning.

ATLANTA, GA -- Opposing NFL teams just got some bad news: Running back Devonta Freeman signed a five-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons, cementing the ground game for one of the league's top-rated offenses. Terms of the deal were not released by the Falcons, but multiple media outlets reported that the sum was for $41.25 million, making him the highest-paid running back in the NFL.

Freeman, a two-time Pro Bowler, was the biggest question mark for a team that fell just short of winning the Super Bowl at the conclusion of last season. Get Patch's Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts. Or, if you have an iPhone, download the free Patch app.

The Falcons front office knew it had to pay Freeman, who has been wanting a deal since the end of last season, to keep him in Atlanta, especially given the projected improvement of other teams in the NFC South, including the New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Bucs and Carolina Panthers.

"We are very pleased that we were able to get this extension done," general manager Thomas Dimitroff said, according to Atlanta Falcons website. "Devonta embodies everything we are looking for in a Falcon, and we are proud that he'll be able to spend his career here in Atlanta."

Freeman, who shares the backfield with Tevin Coleman, is a bruising runner who has played big in big games. In three years, he has rushed for nearly 2,383 yards and 23 touchdowns, while adding 1,265 yards on receptions.

"This is where I've always wanted to be," Freeman was quoted as saying. "I want to thank Mr. Blank, Thomas and Coach (Dan) Quinn for all of their support. I feel extremely blessed, but the work and grind are just beginning."

Freeman was in the last year of his rookie contract and scheduled to make $1.79 million this season.
