Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:

  1. A man was shot on Wednesday evening outside the Atlanta BP station on the corner of 14th Street and Atlantic Drive. Officials investigating believe the man was shot while trying to stop a group of people from stealing a Mercedes-Benz. The man died at the hospital. (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
  2. Atlanta Medical Center, one of the largest hospitals in the city, will close its doors on Nov. 1. Owners of the hospital state the closure is due to a loss of over $100 million last year. The hospital currently operates a busy emergency department and is a staple of care for low-income residents in the community. (Columbus Ledger-Enquirer)
  3. Atlanta will be a busy city on Labor Day Weekend, as 1.6 million people are expected to travel to, through, or from the city's airport. Hartsfield-Jackson Airport projects that today will be its busiest travel day with an expected 300,000 passengers. Airport officials suggest travelers arrive at the airport at least two hours prior to their departure and make sure their luggage has been properly inspected beforehand so as to not delay security checkpoints.   4. An update for Atlanta drivers: The Georgia gas tax suspension will be extended again. Gov. Brian Kemp’s office confirmed yesterday morning that he will sign an extension for the gas tax to last until Oct. 12. The suspension will save state residents 30 cents per gallon for gas and 33 cents per gallon for diesel. (WSB Atlanta)
  5. Two women were robbed at gunpoint early Tuesday morning after leaving Chic, a popular nightclub in Atlanta. The women were robbed by two masked men who made off with thousands of dollars in cash, watches, car keys, and house keys. The victims did not want to be named as of Thursday afternoon because the men were still at large. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
