Best, Worst States To Raise A Family Listed: How GA Ranked

Georgia outscored Alabama, Nevada and Louisiana among the best and worst states to raise a family, a new WalletHub ranking shows.

GEORGIA — A new survey that analyzed the U.S. for the best and worst states to raise a family puts Georgia toward the bottom of the pack.

The Peach State ranked 40th, grouping Georgia near Arizona, South Carolina, Louisiana and Arkansas, according to the personal finance agency WalletHub on Monday. Georgia fell just under Alaska, which was No. 39.

The survey reviewed factors such as family fun, health and safety, education and child care, affordability and socioeconomics. Georgia's overall score was 45.27.

On the flip side, the best state to raise a family is Massachusetts, which scored 68.88.

“Raising a family has become significantly more expensive in recent years as the cost of living has risen quickly. In fact, it can cost a family well over $300,000 to raise a child to age 18, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture," WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo said in a news release.

"In light of the expensive nature of being a parent and the responsibility it entails, it’s important to live in a city that is affordable while still providing quality health care, education, safety and opportunities for enrichment.”

Here are the top 10 states to raise a family, per WalletHub:

  1. Massachusetts
  2. Minnesota
  3. North Dakota
  4. Nebraska
  5. New Hampshire
  6. New York
  7. Illinois
  8. Wisconsin
  9. Maine
  10. Connecticut

The bottom 10 states to raise a family (with New Mexico being the 50th) were:

  1. Arizona
  2. South Carolina
  3. Louisiana
  4. Arkansas
  5. Alabama
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Nevada
  8. West Virginia
  9. Mississippi
  10. New Mexico
