- Awet New York will debut its first-ever Black-owned brand showcase at New York Fashion Week. Seven Black-owned firms throughout New York will present their collections on Feb. 9-16, along with Atlanta-based fashion brand Wearbrims. Wearbrims has become one of Atlanta’s hottest fashion staples since Archie Clay III and Tahj Crutch started the luxury fashion brand in 2016. (The Atlanta Voice)
- Roslyn Pope, author of "An Appeal for Human Rights," has died at age 84. A college professor and musician, Pope wrote the appeal as a 21-year-old senior at Spelman College to provide reasons for the Atlanta Student Movement against systemic racism in 1960. Her document launched a nonviolent campaign of boycotts and sit-ins by Black college students protesting discrimination in voting education, jobs, housing, hospitals, movies, concerts, restaurants, and law enforcement. - A high-speed chase in east Alabama on Feb. 10 led to the arrest of an Atlanta-based armed robbery suspect. According to police, Deonta Taylor of Stone Mountain was wanted for a crime in Decatur, AL. A tracker was put on Taylor’s car, but the suspect left before officers arrived near Roanoke, Alabama, and a high-speed chase ensued until the suspect's car crashed. (WTVM)
- Emory University is partnering with Midtown Alliance for the next class of the Midtown Heart of the Arts Residency Program. Four Atlanta artists will spend the next 18 months working in studio spaces in Emory University commercial property near the University's Midtown Hospital. The initiative, which runs from January 2023 through June 2024, includes a financial stipend and an opportunity to increase their art's visibility. (SaportaReport)
- Sarah Michelle Gellar was honored with the SCAD TVfest Icon Award. The actress said, "It feels like this might be my retirement party. I’m not sure you’re supposed to win these when you’re still alive!"Gellar is not retiring anytime soon — in fact, the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star is the executive producer and star of the new Paramount+ series "Wolf Pack." - Beyonce added a third Atlanta show to her worldwide tour. The new performance will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 14, at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. You can grab tickets to the show on Ticketmaster. (Atlanta Patch)
- The new “Nature of Color” exhibition at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History explores the science of color, how colors make us feel, how colors are perceived across cultures, and how animals use color to help them survive. (WABE 90.1 FM)
- MARTA is replacing the tracks near Buckhead Station in the center of GA-400. From 9 p.m. on Feb. 17 through the end of service on Feb. 22, Red Line service will be suspended south of Medical Center Station. You can read more about the service suspension here. (MARTA via Facebook)
