Tornadoes, Flooding To Hit With GA Storms: See Timing

The chances for wind gusts of at least 50 mph and an isolated brief tornado puts Georgia at a Level 1 marginal risk for severe storms.

Commuters should be mindful of possible flash flooding, and the chances of a brief tornado, that could potentially make traveling more difficult this weekend in Georgia.

Flash floods could be the result of excessive flooding during storms, the National Weather Service's Peachtree City office said Friday.

Far north Georgia and areas through north Atlanta were placed under a Level 2 slight risk for flooding for Friday evening going into Saturday morning. There was a 15 percent probability of flooding within 25 miles of Atlanta, the NWS reported.

The rainfall pattern will be a prelude to a Saturday cold front, the NWS reported. Downpour accumulation could reach 2-3 inches, possibly surpassing 4 inches in some areas.

The system, which could become strong or severe, will travel East ahead of the cold front. The storms are set to arrive before 7 p.m. Saturday, followed by showers.

For wintertime in Georgia, the state was quite warm on Friday, with some areas reaching between 80 and 85 degrees. A high temperature in Atlanta was 72 degrees.

Temperatures will slightly shift with the incoming rain, according to NWS graphics.

Here is the National Weather Service's late Friday morning detailed forecast for metro Atlanta:

Today: Showers likely, mainly after 5 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 72. South wind 5-10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Tonight: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 4 a.m. Low around 62. South wind around 5 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Saturday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 70. South wind 10-15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Saturday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 7 p.m., then a chance of showers between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 41. Northwest wind 10-15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 47. Northwest wind 10-15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 28.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 48.

Monday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 31.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 55.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 37.
