Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:
- Atlanta father Terence Favors Denson, 36, was shot and killed on Sep. 8. Denson had been working to reduce violent crimes in his community after his 15-year-old son, Terence, was shot to death in June. In August, Denson ran to help save a six-year-old's life after someone open-fired at a softball game in Mechanicsville. (Atlanta Patch)
- The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) has determined the Atlanta Police Foundation is an outlier compared to other foundations in the United States. After analyzing recent tax filings from 20 large city police foundations, the AJC found Atlanta's had the most employees, the largest board of private-sector leaders, and the CEO made the most money – more than the city's mayor and police chief. - One metro Atlanta school district has implemented a new program to reduce fighting in schools. Clayton County will now have a group of administrators who will rotate between the schools to be present during arrival and dismissal, lunch in cafeterias, and the changing of classes. The district said this is at no extra cost and comes with no new hires. (WSB Atlanta)
- A family in the Lindbergh neighborhood of Atlanta captured surveillance footage of a shirtless, bearded man, wearing crocs, breaking into their home on Wednesday afternoon. The footage shows the man jump a wooden fence onto the family's deck and bust through the back door to get into the home. As of Friday afternoon, the man had not been identified and had gotten any with thousands of dollars in goods. (CBS 46 News)
- A Fulton County man was still in the ICU as of Thursday evening after being found beaten and unconscious along a trail at Roswell Area Park. Matthew Donald, a new father, was found by a fellow jogger on the trail who called the police. Donald's family says he will not need extensive surgery, but he remains on a ventilator. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
