Flight Delays At ATL Airport Due To Heavy Storms

Afternoon storms were forcing flight delays at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Monday.

ATLANTA, GA — Afternoon thunderstorms are interfering with travel plans Monday in Georgia as they forced a ground stop and an hour-long delay at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

WANF reported the ground stop was extended until 3:15 p.m., but data from the Federal Aviation Administration showed gate holds and taxi delays ranging from 1 hour and 1 minute to 1 hour and 15 minutes and rising.

All inbound flights coming into Hartsfield-Jackson were being held at their origin until 4:30 p.m., according to online tracker FlightAware.

The FAA, earlier in the day, reported traffic coming into Hartsfield-Jackson experienced airborne delays of no more than 15 minutes, while earlier FlightAware data showed an average 35-minute delay for incoming traffic.

Flights leaving Atlanta to San Francisco International Airport in California were hit by an average 55-minute delay due to weather.

The National Weather Service predicted scattered thunderstorms through 9 p.m. Monday in metro Atlanta, which houses Hartsfield-Jackson. Heavy rainfall, frequent lightning and gusty winds could accompany these storms.

The thunderstorms could last through at least Sunday, according to the NWS.

Heat was also a concern with the storms. The NWS issued a heat advisory for some parts of east and central Georgia, which will expire at 8 p.m. Monday.

While heat index values could rise to 108 degrees in some areas, the advisory was issued for counties where heat indices may reach at least 105 degrees, including Clarke, Barrow and Oconee.

In metro Atlanta, high temperatures were expected to be in the low 90s.
