GA's Top Prosecutor Plans 2026 Bid For Governor
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr on Thursday said he is planning to run for governor in 2026, following Gov. Brian Kemp's exit.

ATLANTA, GA — Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr on Thursday announced his intention to fill the state's gubernatorial seat in 2026 following Gov. Brian Kemp's second and final term.
Carr, a Republican, tweeted that he filed the necessary paperwork to run on Thursday.
"As a proven conservative, building on the legacy of Brian Kemp, Nathan Deal and Sonny Perdue, I’m running to create jobs for hardworking Georgians, keep our families and our neighborhoods safe and vigorously defend our constitution and our freedoms. Together, we will fight to keep Georgia red," Carr tweeted.

News of Carr's bid came a day after the Republican Governors Association announced Kemp as its incoming chairperson and Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte as vice chairperson for 2025.
"It’s an honor to be elected @GOPGovs Chair by my colleagues! I’m looking forward to working with Vice Chair @GregForMontana and our fellow Republican governors to ensure crucial victories in 2025 and beyond. Let’s get to work," Kemp tweeted.

Carr has served as attorney general since 2016, when former Gov. Nathan Deal appointed him to the role. He was then re-elected in November 2022.
His service includes establishing Georgia's inaugural Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit in 2019 and the first statewide Gang Prosecution Unit in July 2022, according to his biography.
This year, he created a prosecution unit that combats organized retail crime, according to his biography.
Carr, a University of Georgia graduate, formerly served as vice president and general counsel for the Georgia Public Policy Foundation, according to his biography.
