ATLANTA, GA — In the wake of an attack on the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, Democrats and U.S. Reps. Carolyn Bourdeaux and Lucy McBath joined a group of representatives calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, the representatives tweeted Wednesday.

Protesters stormed their way into the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6 to halt the Electoral College certification of Joe Biden as the next president of the United States. The move overwhelmed Capitol Police, who evacuated members of Congress as violence escalated.

"Today, armed pro-Trump insurrectionists stormed our nation’s capitol and a person was shot," Bourdeaux said in a tweet. "I condemn what happened in the strongest possible terms — and we need to be clear that the outgoing president and his enablers have routinely fanned the flames that sparked today’s riots."

Bourdeaux announced that she would join these calls for Trump's impeachment at 5:39 p.m. ET Jan. 6. The House of Representatives already voted to impeach Trump in December 2019.

"In light of the personal responsibility Trump bears for today’s events and his flagrant efforts to undermine the election in Georgia, I recommend the House move forward with impeachment proceedings immediately," Bourdeaux said in a follow-up tweet. "I urge my colleagues to do the right thing."

McBath joined Bourdeaux in calling for Trump's impeachment less than two hours later.

"Tonight, I am asking Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and begin the process of removing President Trump from office," McBath said in a tweet. "The eyes of the world are upon us, and the President's incitement of violence, his inducement of chaos and his inability to faithfully 'discharge the powers and duties of his office' make it clear. The President has refused to protect our democracy and must be removed."

Several other Democrats have joined calls for Trump's impeachment. Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, said in a tweet Wednesday afternoon that she is drafting articles of impeachment against Trump.

"Donald J. Trump should be impeached by the House of Representatives and removed from office by the United States Senate," Omar said in the tweet. "We can't allow him to remain in office, it's a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath."
