Here are the top five stories in Atlanta today:
- A hydroponic farming company has plans to hire 150 employees at a $120M facility near Atlanta. On Monday, Ohio-based 80 Acres Farms said the facility will be completed in August and start sending organic produce to consumers in early 2023. The company currently provides produce to Kroger Co., the Whole Foods Market division of Amazon, and specialty grocer The Fresh Market, as well as food service distributors. (Macon Telegraph)
- National educational nonprofit Jumpstart ATL is fighting for early childhood education in low-income communities. For the past 15 years, the nonprofit has partnered with early childhood learning centers to place trained college students in preschool classrooms. According to Jumpstart’s associate vice president of development Candice Jordan, the organization works to make sure that the college students in the classrooms reflect the communities they are serving — 99 percent of the students they serve in Jumpstart Atlanta are Black, and they value the connection between instructors and the students who often come from the same community. - Police activity was ongoing on Tuesday at a future police and fire training complex site in Atlanta. "Cop City," located in south Atlanta, has seen multiple protest encampments lately. According to 11Alive's on-the-scene reporter Joe Henke, there were a dozen officers driving down Key Road into the South River Forest where the encampments have been located; at the time of this writing, the station had not been able to confirm the nature of the police activity independently. - A man was caught on camera trashing a metro Atlanta restaurant after being asked to leave. According to authorities, Jack Wade threw a planter through the glass door of the Hen Mother Cookhouse at 11705 Jones Bridge Rd., then broke several dishes and other items inside the restaurant. The incident occurred on Jun. 5, and the man has since admitted to breaking in. (WSB Atlanta)
