Here are the top five stories in Atlanta today:

  1. The suspects in a carjacking in Atlanta are related to a gang, according to the Fulton County District Attorney's office. According to reports, members of the gang have been suspects in similar crimes. The carjacking took place on Jul. 16 when a woman had her SUV stolen from her and then she was run over by the SUV. The carjacker has since been arrested but is being investigated as part of larger gang activity. (WSB Atlanta)
  2. Severe overcrowding in Fulton County facilities has prompted the lease of up to 700 beds from the Atlanta City Detention Center. The Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat has called the overcrowding a crisis. Detainees in Fulton County facilities are being forced to sleep on the ground as a result of the overcrowding. The Mayor reiterated his commitment to repurpose the detention center after the lease agreement is completed. (Metro Atlanta CEO)
  3. Street racing in metro Atlanta is still a big issue despite police crackdowns. Drivers were trapped on Sunday evening when street racers shut down the intersection of North Decatur Road and DeKalb Industrial Parkway. Onlookers took cell phone footage of the racing. 4. A House Committee is investigating Ventron Management for its eviction filings during the federal eviction moratorium. 5. As gas stations become a common crime scene, local officials want to require security cameras. According to council member Keisha Waites, the addition of security cameras would make residents feel safer while at the pump.
