Metro Atlanta School Districts Prep For Storm

Students in Atlanta, Fulton, Cobb, DeKalb and Clayton affected as storm bears down on area.

ATLANTA, GA -- As a winter storm approaches the Southeast on Friday, many metro Atlanta school districts are adjusting their schedules in preparation.

Temperatures are only expected to reach the mid-30s Friday as a precipitation mix of rain, sleet and snow is expected to move over metro Atlanta later in the day. In North Georgia, that precipitation is expected to turn into snow by early Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

Metro Atlanta may see as much as a quarter-inch of snow late Friday into Saturday, the service said. Below are the adjusted schedules for school districts around metro Atlanta:

Atlanta Public Schools

Atlanta Public Schools will be dismissed two hours early. Elementary Schools at 12:30 p.m., High Schools at 1:30 p.m., and Middle Schools at 2:05 p.m. All after-school and weekend activities are canceled.

DeKalb County Schools

In DeKalb County, classes will be released two hours early on Friday and all evening and weekend activities canceled as a winter storm approaches metro Atlanta, the district announced late Thursday.

In Cobb County, all schools will release two hours early due to the inclement weather headed toward the area. After-school programs are canceled along with weekend activities.

Fulton County Schools

In Fulton County, all schools and activities will be released at noon due to the winter storm, the district said late Thursday.

In Clayton County schools district will release students beginning at 12:15 p.m.

Elementary Schools - 12:15 p.m.

· Middle Schools - 1:15 p.m.

· High Schools - 2:15 p.m.

All after-school and weekend activities are canceled, the school district said late Thursday.

Parents will need to be careful on the roads as they go to pick up their children. As conditions deteriorate Friday evening, slick roads will make for hazardous conditions, according to the National Weather Service. "Travel could quickly become dangerous. Exercise extreme caution if travel is necessary," the service said.
