More Than 60 Dogs Rescued From 'Overwhelmed' Pet Owner In Georgia

The Atlanta Humane Society said many of the 60 dogs rescued will require medical and behavioral care, and the shelter could use donations.

ATLANTA, GA — More than 60 dogs are now safe and receiving proper care after two animal groups said they removed them from an overwhelmed pet owner in central Georgia over the weekend.

Pictures taken from the rescue show at least one dog with sores and scabs on its face. Another photo shows a dog lying on the ground with a cage behind it.

The Atlanta Humane Society, which assisted Hancock Animal Friends, Inc. with the rescue in Hancock County on Saturday, said it will care for 29 of the dogs. According to the organization, many will require medical and behavioral support.

"Thank you to everyone who was able to make this happen and finally get these dogs to shelters and medical attention for those that required it," Hancock Animal Friends, Inc. posted to Facebook following the rescue. "If this situation isn’t a wake-up call of the extent of the stray issue Hancock county is facing nothing will be. Awareness is the key to finding solutions."

Representatives with Hancock Animal Friends, Inc. said the homeowner had "tried to do the right thing" by helping a few strays, but she gradually became overwhelmed — especially as litters were born.

"This person didn’t know who else to call as no one offered an alternative," Hancock Animal Friends, Inc. said. "Praying this pushes the completion and extreme need of a shelter in Hancock County now."

The Atlanta Humane Society is requesting donations to help care for the dogs that were removed from the pet owner's property.

"When you give before May 14, all gifts — up to $70,000 — will be triple matched thanks to a generous matching gift opportunity provided by the estate of Jan Hayes," the animal rescue group has posted to its fundraising page.
