The Ebenezer Baptist Church is notable for its history and connection to America's civil rights movement. Martin Luther King Jr. served as a co-pastor at the church from 1960 until his assassination in 1968. King's daughter, Rev. Bernice A. King, will speak at Brooks’ funeral, CNN reported. The church's senior pastor, Rev. Raphael G. Warnock, will deliver the eulogy.

"Ebenezer is a parish for all people, a sanctuary for those who suffer," Warnock said in a statement. "Rayshard was not a member of our church but he, and his loved ones, are a part of our family. We seek to embrace them, comfort them and walk beside them in the days ahead."

The aftermath of Brooks' death continues to rock Atlanta. In announcing murder charges against now-fired Atlanta officer Garrett Rolfe, Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said that Brooks, 27, "never presented himself as a threat" prior to the moments in which Brooks broke away from the officers trying to arrest him on suspicion of driving drunk.

An autopsy report found Brooks had been shot twice in the back. In the wake of the incident, Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields resigned. The Georgia Law Enforcement Organization announced a fundraiser for Rolfe and called Brooks' death a "justified shooting."
