Storms To Hit GA Amid Near-Record Fall Heat: See Latest

Forecasters told Patch when Georgia could expect showers and isolated thunderstorms amid near-record-breaking heat. Here's the latest.

ATLANTA, GA — While forecasters monitor near-record-breaking heat, weekend storms could hit as soon as Friday in Georgia due to a cold front.

The cold front will usher in showers and few isolated thunderstorms Friday evening through Saturday in metro Atlanta, National Weather Service meteorologist Vaughn Smith told Patch on Wednesday. Other parts of the northern region may see their own showers.

This is all due to moisture from a southwesterly flow that is driving "good warm air" from the Gulf of Mexico into southern Florida, Alabama and Mississippi and into Georgia.

Smith said no strong or severe is weather is currently anticipated.

Ahead of the rain, Georgia is inching toward record-breaking heat. The Peach State's best chance to shatter record-high temperatures will be either Thursday or Friday, when temperatures in the mid- to upper-70s are expected, Smith said.

Normal highs during this time of the year, when fall is in full swing, are in the mid- to upper-50s.

Georgia may not chill, again, any time soon as Smith said the warm air could last through next week.

"We're just not able to cool down at all," he said.
