Last Day To File Taxes In GA Arrives: What Taxpayers Should Know

The Internal Revenue Service extended the tax filing deadline in Georgia, normally on April 15, to May 1 due to Hurricane Helene.

ATLANTA, GA — Friday, May 1, is the last day to file 2024 tax returns in Georgia.

The Internal Revenue Service extended the tax filing deadline, normally on April 15, to May 1 due to Hurricane Helene. The deadly storm ravaged Georgia and other parts of the Atlantic coast in September 2024.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency declared Georgia a disaster area post-Helene, making all 159 counties eligible for the latest tax relief, the IRS stated. This included taxpayers who had their returns and payment postponed until Feb. 3 due to Hurricane Debby, another fatal storm that slammed Georgia in August 2024.

Partially, the May 1 filing deadline applies to:

  • Individuals and businesses that have a 2024 return normally due during March or April 2025.
  • Individuals who had a valid extension to file their 2023 return due to run out on Oct. 15, 2024. The IRS noted, however, that because tax payments related to these 2023 returns were due on April 15, 2024, those payments are not eligible for this relief.
  • Calendar-year corporations whose 2023 extensions run out on Oct. 15, 2024.

The IRS offers various ways to request an extension or payment plan, though approvals will be at the agency's discretion. Not paying money owed by the annual tax deadline makes taxpayers subject to penalties or interest, according to the IRS' website.

Payment plans for state taxes are also available via the Georgia Tax Center or Form GA-9465 Installment Agreement Request, state revenue officials stated.

Both the IRS and the Georgia Department of Revenue have established online tools for checking refund statuses, should a person be expecting money back this year.

The GDR has also set up a tool for Georgians to check the status of their surplus tax refunds, which stem from a bill Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law in mid-April. Some Georgia taxpayers are set to receive up to $500 in rebates.

The GDR told Patch that officials could start issuing refunds for timely filers around late May or early June.
