Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:
- A 19-year-old is dead after an accidental house party shooting. A neighbor said they got the impression that the teenagers at the party were playing around with the gun and accidentally hit the victim. The victim died shortly after from his wounds. Police did handcuff someone at the party, but they have not released any information about charges. (WSB Atlanta)
- The City of Atlanta and the Urban League of Atlanta have teamed up to create the Youth Development Grant. Mayor Dickens said, “There is no denying that investing in our youth from an early age builds a solid foundation for success and opportunity in the future.” The grant is intended to fund organizations and grassroots efforts that aim to help Atlanta students. Eligible programs include health and wellness, academic support, career training, and arts education. (Metro Atlanta CEO)
- According to her mother's GoFundMe, a 6-year-old girl who was shot nine times in a mass shooting at an Atlanta park remains in critical condition. Serenity Stephens was one of six people shot at Rosa L. Burney Park on Sunday. 31-year-old Rashad Roger and 33-year-old April Sparks were killed during the shooting. Police have not made an arrest. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Atlanta Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 404-546-4235 or the Crime Stoppers Atlanta tip line at 404-577-TIPS (8477). (WSB Atlanta)
- In a car chase near Atlanta on Saturday, police slammed into the other car and pushed four shoplifting suspects to veer off a major highway. The Forsyth County Sheriff has identified the officer as a deputy in the crime reduction unit but has not publicly released his identity. Grandin Road Footage shows the deputy briefly following the car before positioning the front of his vehicle near the blinking left tail light of the fleeing car and ramming into the bumper from a very close range, causing the car to spin clockwise in a semi-circle until it slid off the edge of the highway. The four shoplifting suspects were arrested when they emerged from the car. (MSN)
- The former Atlanta home of golf legend Bobby Jones has been listed for $3.25 million. The home, located in Tuxedo Park, has six bedrooms, five bathrooms, and 5,734 square feet. The listing says the home was custom built for Jones in 1929 as a gift from the City of Atlanta. This home is rumored to be where Bobby Jones and Cliff Roberts conceived of the Masters Tournament. Jones was born and raised in Atlanta, attended Georgia Tech, won the U.S. Open in 1923, completed the Grand Slam in 1930, founded the Masters, and founded Atlanta's Peachtree Gold Club. (11Alive)
