Thanksgiving Week Could Be More Rainy Than Normal In GA. Find Out Why.

Forecasters told Patch much of Georgia could face rainfall up to 2 inches to close out November. Find out what that means for Thanksgiving.

Georgia could be facing wetter-than-normal conditions the remainder of November, including this week when families will be traveling for Thanksgiving.

The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center advised the rain probability is 40-50 percent above normal for the last week of November. On Thursday, western Georgia was in a severe drought, while drought conditions in southern Georgia were exceptional.

NWS meteorologist Luke Culver told Patch the higher rain chances will be due to an upcoming mid-level trough that will develop across the eastern U.S., where wind will drive in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Currently, a ridge over the Southeast is supporting abnormal drier conditions.

Culver added the weather service's forecast indicated a slight lean for above-normal precipitation for this time of the year when Georgia usually sees about 1 to 1 1/2 inches of rainfall in the last 10 days. In some past years, there was no downpour around this time in Georgia.

The forecast showed much of Georgia could face rainfall up to 2 inches at the end of the month, he said.

This does not mean it will rain daily, Culver said, but there will be increased opportunities for wet days. On Thanksgiving and Black Friday, the rainfall chances are 10-20 percent.

Weather is not expected to be severe, though some routine showers could transform into storms, Culver said.

This comes as Georgia bears the brunt of abnormal fall heat. The NWS on Wednesday said Macon has broken its daily record high for temperatures, and other areas were expected to follow suit.

Culver said while temperatures will continue to be warmer through mid-week, they may cool on Thanksgiving into the weekend as the state moves into the backside of the trough.

The NWS reported major drought relief is not likely the rest of November.
