Severe Storms, Tornado Possible Tuesday In GA: See Latest Forecast

ATLANTA, GA — Severe storms continue to roll through Georgia on Tuesday, with forecasters predicting a possible isolated brief tornado and 60-mph wind gusts in the northern and central regions.

There is also potential for hail up to the size of a quarter, the National Weather Service reported. Western to central Georgia, areas west of Interstate 75, is under a Level 1 marginal risk for severe storms.

The NWS reported the highest threat for isolated severe storms will be midday Tuesday through midnight Wednesday.

In Atlanta, there was a 60-80 percent chance of precipitation during the day and an increased probability of 80-100 percent by nightfall, according to NWS graphics. By Wednesday, the storms are slated to shift to Georgia's Southeast region.

The storms derive from a strong cold front and come as people begin traveling for Thanksgiving. An early morning ground stop at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has since been lifted, according to alerts and reports.

The downpour will clear out until after 1 a.m. Sunday and will resume through Monday, according to the forecast.

Temperatures will start to drop as Georgia cools in time for Thanksgiving. On Thursday, the high temperature will be 50 degrees while the low temperature will plummet to 31 degrees in metro Atlanta.

Tuesday appeared to be the warmest day at 74 degrees in the metro.

Here is the National Weather Service's Tuesday morning detailed forecast for metro Atlanta:

Today: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 4 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. South wind 10-15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 3 a.m. Low around 58. South wind 5-10 mph becoming west after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 66. West wind 10-15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 36. Northwest wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Thanksgiving Day: Sunny, with a high near 50. Northwest wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Thursday Night: Clear, with a low around 31.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 48.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 32.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 51.

Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Sunday: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56.

Sunday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46.
