Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:
- Zoo Atlanta will close early today and tomorrow due to extreme heat. The zoo announced yesterday it will stop letting visitors at 1 p.m. and close the grounds at 2:30 p.m. Atlanta residents are encouraged to take advantage of the morning hours at the zoo and enjoy seeing animals enjoy the water and special sweet treats in the heat. - Trevor Noah will host live shows at the Tabernacle this autumn. “The Daily Show” will travel to Atlanta for an entire week before the midterm elections in November. The show chose battleground territory in Atlanta, GA for the pivotal role Georgia will play. Episodes will air nightly from Oct. 31 through Nov. 3 at 11 p.m. on Comedy Central. The following day, episodes will be available to stream on Paramount+. Ticket information has not yet been released. (Yahoo.com)
- The Atlanta Police Department is asking more residents to help solve crimes by allowing them to tap into private surveillance cameras. Mayor Andre Dickens joined leaders of the city’s police department yesterday for a demonstration on how Connect Atlanta uses publicly- and privately-owned surveillance cameras to solve crimes quickly. The cameras are helping to solve not just violent crimes, but also crimes that affect the quality of life of residents, like car break-ins, porch thefts, and missing children or Alzheimer's patients. - A person was struck by a train at an SW Atlanta railroad crossing. Atlanta police reported a call about a person struck by a vehicle near Wells Street, where tracks cross the street between Humphries Street and Metropolitan Parkway. Norfolk Southern confirmed someone was injured around midnight on Tuesday, but police have not provided details or updates on the person's condition. The company noted the tracks are unsafe for the public at all times. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
- A couple faces prison for their two-week metro Atlanta crime spree. According to police, Quantavious Cedron Arnold and Ericka Brewster put innocent civilians at risk through multiple crimes in Atlanta and DeKalb County. Their crimes included bank robbery and carjacking. Yesterday, Arnold was sentenced to 25 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Brewster was sentenced to four and a half years followed by five years of supervised release. Both must pay $8,000 in restitution. (FOX 5 Atlanta)

- Atlanta Humane Society has adorable beagles up for adoption, and some that need your help. Savannah is 7 years old; one of the oldest of the 27 beagles transferred to AHS last week by the Humane Society of the United States. Savannah's sweet, greying face caught their attention when she arrived - and she needs time, energy, and resources to feel her best and find a perfect home. - Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency (AFCEMA) reminded everyone to stay safe in the upcoming hot temperatures this week. Check on relatives, neighbors, and vulnerable populations.
