Fan Buried Atlanta Falcons Jersey: 'This Shirt is Bad Luck'

ATLANTA, GA -- For the most part, fans in Atlanta are taking the team's Super Bowl defeat in stride, but there are a few among us who are having a hard time.

Case in point: A Twitter user recently uploaded a picture of a Falcons jersey in a Ziplock bag. It looked like it was being buried in the ground, a remnant of what could have been achieved in the Atlanta sports world.

"If you have un-earthed this, you have not found anything vintage or cool this shirt is bad luck," a sheet of paper accompanying the gear reads. "Seriously re-bury it immediately."

While the note may hit a funny bone or two, it also strikes the heart of long-suffering Falcons fans. The franchise has never basked in the glow of a Super Bowl victory in its 51-year existence.

The Atlanta Braves are the last team in the city to have captured a world championship, bringing the World Series title home in 1995. The Atlanta Hawks have not won a championship since moving to the South in 1968.

The Falcons lost to the New England Patriots 34-28 in Super Bowl LI in Houston.

Quarterback Matt Ryan, who was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player hours before his team took the field, posted on Instagram late Monday that as painful as the loss is, the team and city will rise again.
"We came up short last night and my heart hurts for you Atlanta," he said. "Hats off to New England they played a heck of a game. We will adapt, we will over come, we will #RiseUp again."
