Until he wasn’t.

Wednesday, he announced his intention to run to represent Georgia’s 10th Congressional District, after acknowledging that he was given the blessing of former President Donald Trump.

“I’m proud to have President Trump’s endorsement,” Jones said in a social media post.

Trump offered to publicly back a Jones House run, according to reporting from CNN, if the one-time Democrat stepped out of the governor’s race, setting a May GOP contest between incumbent Brian Kemp and Trump’s candidate former U.S. Sen. David Perdue.

Wednesday, Trump gave Jones a hearty thumbs up in a video posted on social media.

“I have only one choice,” Trump said. “And the man’s name is Vernon Jones.”

The 10th, a large swath of urban and rural area stretching southeast between Atlanta and August could be friendly to Jones because it includes some of his old State Senatorial stomping ground in DeKalb and Rockdale counties.

Represented currently by Jody Hice, Trump’s endorsee for Georgia Secretary of State – a move to primary Brad Raffensperger for refusing to overturn a fair Joe Biden election win in Georgia – none of the candidates seeking the GOP nomination have Jones’ name recognition or his plumb support from Trump.
