Here are the top five stories today in Atlanta:
- The Walmart fulfillment center in Atlanta will be laying off over 1,400 workers. The company says these layoffs are a result of restructuring within the company. Walmart will be taking the fulfillment center and transforming it so as to support its expanding Walmart Fulfillment Services unit. Earlier this month, Walmart announced that it will be hiring 40,000 workers for the coming holiday season. (Reuters)
- A carjacking in downtown Atlanta escalated to a shooting and then a car crash on Tuesday. The shooting took place near Ted Turner Drive and Peters Street in the early morning hours. According to reports, the suspects started shooting after the driver of the vehicle failed to surrender it. The driver attempted to flee, crashing into another car in the process. Amazingly, no one was injured. (Atlanta Patch)
- On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Phillies narrowly beat out the Atlanta Braves in the first game of the National League Division Series. The Phillies eked out a 7-6 win over the Braves, in part due to starter Max Fried's early struggle in the game. Game 2 in the series will be played today, with the Atlanta Braves once again going up against the Philadelphia Phillies. (MDJOnline.com)
- I-285 West was reopened Tuesday night after an accident left one man dead. All the lanes on I-285 were shut down after police found a dead man behind the wheel of his vehicle. Officials believe the driver may have been shot before he crashed. All I-285 West lanes were closed for a time as police worked, but they have since been reopened. The investigation into the incident is ongoing. (11Alive.com WXIA)
- A local pastor's wife has died after reportedly being shot in the head while she slept. Last Wednesday, Lashunda Ellison was asleep in her own bed when a stray bullet went through the wall of her Wilkins Court home in nearby Decatur. Ellison was struck in the head; her husband, Pastor Mac Ellison, called paramedics who rushed her to the hospital in critical condition. Lashunda was later pronounced dead. Officials are investigating the incident. (11Alive.com WXIA)
