Here are the top three stories today in Augusta:
- North Augusta's Lorenzo A. Reyes-Garcia, 36, has been identified as the victim in a fatal Aiken County car crash that occurred earlier in April. The single-vehicle crash occurred on Dixie Clay Road, and Reyes-Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force injuries. Reyes-Garcia's 2003 Chevrolet van was traveling west on Dixie Clay Road when it ran off the left side of the road, struck a tree, and overturned. (Subscription: The Augusta Chronicle)
- Augusta Transit has found in recent surveys that the local public transit system needs improvements. Riders have said that buses aren't going where they're needed, and payment options need to be diversified to make the August Transit organization's services more accessible. The transit department intends to add six new buses to the fleet that will allow riders to pay with cards and money transfer apps and will make the case to Richmond County commissioners to expand bus routes. (WJBF-TV)
- Locals will have the option of conveniently disposing of unused medication at the sheriff's department and area drug stores during National Take Back Day next Saturday, Apr. 22. National Take Back Day happens twice annually and is meant to reduce deaths from drug overdoses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the most recent provisional mortality data indicates more than 107,000 Americans died from a drug overdose between 2021 and 2022. Participating drug stores, groceries, and pharmacies in Augusta are available at the link. (WRDW)
