Porch Pirate Nabbed By Off-Duty Brookhaven Officer

A Brookhaven police sergeant was on his way home when he saw something suspicious. So he conducted one more traffic stop.

BROOKHAVEN, GA -- Brookhaven police Sgt. Charles McCoy was off the clock and on his way home around 7 pm Saturday when he saw something suspicious. Someone was running away from a front porch, package in hand. McCoy concluded one more traffic stop was in order. McCoy pulled over Isaiah Gresham, who had a pile of open packages in his back seat.

Additional officers were called in who conducted a quick neighborhood canvas to identify the owners of the merchandise. Several victims were rapidly located and were advised to retrieve
their property during regular business hours. When confronted with the information that officers had, Gresham gave a full confession and was arrested and transported to the DeKalb County jail.

β€œThanks to Sgt. McCoy’s awareness and quick action, along with the other officers who responded in support, we were able to get another criminal off the streets and prevent several Christmas holidays from being ruined by thieves,” said Brookhaven Police Chief Gary Yandura. β€œIt’s also a reminder that everyone is vulnerable to thefts this time of year, so be alert, take precautions, and if you see something, say something.”
