Brookhaven Police Arrest Texas Bank Robbery Suspect

A license plate reader was instrumental in alerting Brookhaven police the bank robbery suspect was in town.

BROOKHAVEN, GA – Local police arrested a Texas bank robbery suspect Wednesday, Jan. 2, with the help of a license plate reading (LPR) device. Walter Cobb, 36, is accused of robbing at least two banks in Denton, Texas before Christmas. Denton police released surveillance images and a description of the suspect to the public asking for help in locating him. Cobb eluded authorities as he fled toward Georgia.

One of Brookhaven’s LPRs was instrumental in alerting Brookhaven police that a bank robbery suspect was in the city. Officers quickly converged on the area and located the suspect. Police learned that Cobb was not only wanted for multiple bank robberies, but he was also driving with a suspended license, faulty brake light, and was in possession of marijuana. Police also believed Cobb was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Brookhaven police partnered with Georgia Power in 2017 to provided LPRs throughout the city at strategic locations. Additionally, neighborhoods in Brookhaven have installed LPR equipment on their roads as well. The LPRs focus on offenses such as carjackings, stolen vehicles, wanted persons, and more.

β€œUtilizing license plate reader technology has been instrumental in both detection and deterrence of crime,” said Brookhaven Police Chief Gary Yandura. β€œIt has also proven useful in locating dangerous fugitives who have committed serious crimes and are attempting to elude authorities.”

Since 2017, Brookhaven officers have made several arrests of individuals in stolen vehicles after being alerted by the LPRs. They have also used the technology to solve many other types of crimes.

Cobb was arrested and transported to the DeKalb County Jail and charged with DUI, Possession of Marijuana, and other traffic-related charges. He will also be held for Texas on their bank robberies.
