Brookhaven Police Department launches ‘Operation Plugged In’

Voluntary video surveillance program connects police, residents, businesses.

In an effort to provide police officers with more crime-solving tools, the Brookhaven Police Department has launched “Operation Plugged In,” a voluntary program that lets police know where video surveillance cameras are located in the city.

According to Police Chief Gary Yandura, when officers are able to access video recordings of criminal incidents, the department is often able to more efficiently solve crimes and arrest suspects.
“Operation Plugged In is a great tool for us to utilize after a crime has occurred,” Chief Yandura said. “It has already helped us clear up some burglary and auto theft cases.”

The program is a police/community video partnership that operates on a voluntary basis with homeowners, neighborhoods and business owners who own private video security systems that record public areas such as roads, parking lots and sidewalks. The department encourages both businesses and residents to register their cameras online here or complete this pdf and return to the Brookhaven Police Department at 2665 Buford Highway.

This program is intended to let Brookhaven Police officers know where cameras are active in the city in case a crime occurs. It is not intended for active surveillance, and officers will not have direct access to homeowners' cameras. Those who register a camera will be contacted if a crime occurs in the vicinity of that camera. Information provided by residents and businesses will be maintained in a secure database.
Participants will be provided with a small sticker for those wishing to place them on their property to help deter crime. For more information, contact the Brookhaven Police Department at 404-637-0600.
