Georgia 2020: Two GA House Districts Set Up As Battlegrounds

Metro Atlanta's 6th and 7th congressional districts will be among the nation's most crucial national elections in 2020.

ATLANTA -- The 2020 elections are officially underway in metro Atlanta following U.S. Rep. Rod Woodall's shocking Wednesday announcement that he will not seek reelection in 2020. Woodall, a Republican, narrowly won reelection last fall following a strong challenge from Democrat Carolyn Bourdeaux, who immediately announced she would run again in 2020.

Bourdeaux lost to Woodall by 433 votes. The 7th congressional district includes portions of Gwinnett and Forsyth County, and its election was the nation's closest congressional contest last fall.

In metro Atlanta's 6th district, newly elected Democratic congresswoman Lucy McBath has had a hard time getting her constituent services off the ground. As reported by Insider Advantage, constituents with urgent requests were being directed to U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson's office while McBath's new office was being inundated with what it called a "high volume of correspondence."

McBath has already picked up one GOP challenger: state Sen. Brandon Beach of Alpharetta, who has served District 21 in the General Assembly since 2013. Beach's district includes Alpharetta, Milton and the eastern half of Cherokee County. Beach has already filed a formal statement of candidacy with the Federal Elections Commission.

McBath narrowly ousted incumbent Karen Handel from the 6th district last fall, just over a year after Handel won the seat in a special election that became the nation's most expensive congressional election in history.

Georgia's 6th district includes portions of east Cobb, north Fulton and north DeKalb counties as well as the cities of Roswell, Johns Creek, Tucker, Alpharetta, Milton, Mountain Park, Brookhaven, Sandy Springs, Doraville and Dunwoody.
