Rockstar Speller Heads to Washington

Marist School student Julia Denniss is on her way to the National Bee

I'm a respectable speller, but spelling under pressure with thousands of people watching along with a panel of judges, is another thing altogether.

That's why I find Julia Denniss - the eighth-grader we in March - so admirable.  Julia made history as Georgia's first three-time state spelling bee champion. The 14-year-old Fulton County resident will now represent the state in the Scripps National Spelling Bee Championships in Washington, D.C. on June 1-2.

But what was even more cool was her local mini bee this week where she took on 11Alive's Karyn Greer, Jill Becker and Chesley McNeil. Sweet!

The semifinals will air live on ESPN Thursday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT and  and championship finals on on ESPN June 2 from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Regardless of Julia's performance at the National Bee, we can all agree that Julia is a champ in all our books.

You rock, Julia!
