Sarcoma Awareness Sunset Stroll Set For June 12 in Brookhaven
The Northside Hospital Cancer Institute is inviting the community to raise awareness of sarcoma and honor patients.

BROOKHAVEN, GA -- Food trucks, friends and a “sunset stroll” – all to raise awareness of cancer – are planned for June 12 at Blackburn Park in Brookhaven. The Northside Hospital Cancer Institute is inviting the community to raise awareness of sarcoma and honor patients during a leisurely sunset stroll through the park. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m.; the stroll at 7 p.m.
This will mark the seventh year that the Sarcoma Awareness Sunset Stroll has taken place. This year’s event will be held at Blackburn Park near the Blackburn Pavilion. The community is encouraged to arrive early to enjoy dinner from one of Blackburn Park’s food trucks, or bring their own picnic. Free parking will be available at Kroger, across the street.
The event is free to participate; however, donations are welcome. All proceeds benefit education, treatment and support for patients at the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute’s Sarcoma Program.

Sarcoma is a rare cancer that develops from connective tissues of the body such as bones, cartilage, fat, muscles, nerve tissue, fibrous tissues or blood vessels. It accounts for just one percent of cancers in adults. According to the American Cancer Society, there will be about 15,000 new cases of sarcoma in the U.S. this year. Many patients have never heard of the disease prior to diagnosis.
“Participating in community events such as the sunset stroll are an important part of the healing process,” said Dr. Kamal N. Ummed, Georgia Cancer Specialists. “Not only does it raise community awareness for these rare cancers, but it also helps patients and families learn as well as teach from shared experiences and realize that they are not alone.”
