APS Eighth-Grader Dies After Illness in Class
Middle school boy in northwest Atlanta died after being rushed to the hospital on Wednesday.
A middle school student in northwest Atlanta became sick in class and died on Wednesday.
Melvin Bussey, an eighth-grader at Bunche Middle School, died after being rushed to the hospital. In a statement, Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Erroll Davis said it was a difficult time for the APS family.
“We are extremely saddened by the loss of our student Melvin Bussey. According to our reports, Melvin fell ill in class yesterday and was rushed to the hospital, where he later passed away. Emergency services and the family were contacted immediately, and the principal was with the family. Grief counselors will be at the school today and tomorrow to provide support for students and staff in dealing with this loss. We will keep the family in our thoughts and appreciate the media's cooperation during this challenging time for our students and staff.”

APS did not provide further details surrounding the circumstances of Bussey’s death. Bunche Middle School is located at 2250 Perry Boulevard off Bolton Road.
