Local 5th Grader Raises $50,000 for Diabetes Research

One dedicated and talented 5th grader is being recognized for her stellar fund raising abilities.

Last week, the APS spotlight shined bright for a local 5th grader from Jackson Elementary who has amazingly raised $50,000 for diabetes research.Β  Molly Cann made it her mission to help scientists solve the problems of diabetes, but no one expected the 5th grader to make such a big impact.

According to the Talk Up APS Blog that highlighted Molly's accomplishments, the 5th grader also suffers from Type 1 diabetes and was not surprised by her achievement.Β  Her teacher at Jackson Elementary said,Β  "Molly was not completely blown away when she learned the total.Β  She never gives less than her best, and as a result she has grown quite accustomed to aiming high and finishing big."

Molly says her diabetes has helped her become a more responsible, caring and service-oriented person.Β  She understands what she must do and what she must refrain from doing to prevent any life-threatening situations from occurring, and she realizes how important it is for her to help others. Β And as Molly sees it, she also has a responsibility to educate others about her illness.Β  In fact, a critical part of her fundraiser was providing information about diabetes to her schoolmates during an assembly.

Molly Cann's accolades do not end there.Β  Molly is a gymnast, she plays tennis, sings, acts, and is even a Challenge student with straight A's.

Jackson Elementary principal, Dr. LorraineΒ Reich, told TalkUp APS that Molly is "every teacher’s dream student; she makes excellent grades, she is helpful to her peers and her teachers, and she always goes the extra mile."
