CANTON, GA — A Cherokee County man has been arrested and charged with murdering his girlfriend over the weekend, the Cherokee Sheriff's Office said. Jesse Simmons, 40, of Canton, is charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during certain crimes in the shooting death of Tammy Gilbert.
Deputies with the agency were dispatched to a call at a home on Lower Burris Road around 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5 after Simmons "reported his girlfriend had shot herself," the agency said.
Gilbert, 55, was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where she died of injuries from a gunshot wound.
