- In a joint partnership, Kroger, the American Diabetes Association and the MUST Ministries Mobile Pantry are offering free diabetes testing and risk assessment in Canton this week. The screenings are being held in Canton and Marietta this month, with Canton's happening this Thursday. You can get your screening at Action Church, located at 271 Marietta Road, from 3:30-5:30 p.m., and you can find lots of diabetes-friendly recipes and resources on the American Diabetes Association website here. - Registration for the 2023 Georgia Downtown Conference is now open. Canton is hosting this year, and the August conference is expected to bring hundreds of Georgia's downtown professionals together to network and learn about new initiatives and fresh ideas for downtown development. There will also be a Georgia Downtown Awards Ceremony held to recognize companies, organizations and individuals who have helped improve their downtown areas. - A plaque was unveiled this week, honoring the 2020 dedication of Cherokee County Fire Station 7 to retired Fire Chief Raymond Gunnin. The retired fire chief began his service to this county in 1977 as a volunteer firefighter, became a fire chief in 2005 and retired in 2011. At that point, Gunnin ran for and earned a District 2 seat with the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners, where he remained for two terms. Board and CCFES members, current and retired, spoke of his achievements and successes at the unveiling ceremony, where family, friends and colleagues continued the celebration with a station and fire apparatus tour. - For those on the Holly Springs side of town, the Holly Springs Police Department is asking for help in finding a white Dodge pickup. It is suspected that the truck was used in two home burglaries on June 6, the New Mexico tag is ALNY59. At the time of the incidents, there may have been two or three males and one female inside the vehicle. If you have any information, please contact Detective E. Holloway at 770-721-7536. - The Cherokee County Animal Shelter would like to remind us that there are alternatives to surrendering a pet at the shelter. If you're having a hard time with the cost, convenience or training needed for your pet, the shelter has resources like a pet food pantry, training and moving information and affordable medical care. If rehoming is necessary, the Adopt a Pet "Rehome" service offers guided services and allows you to create a pet profile, review applications, safely meet potential adopters and complete the rehoming process in less stressful way for all involved. - Fresh Start Mornings: Presented by the Cherokee Office of Economic Development (COED). Give and receive feedback, learn and make connections with other local entrepreneurs. The meeting is free and open to the public at The Circuit, 1 Innovation Way in Woodstock. (9 - 10 a.m.)
- BridgeMill Farmers Market: The market is open to all and will take place every Wednesday until November. The neighborhood is located at 1190 Bridge Mill Avenue, the market is next to the playground. (9 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
- Barely Balanced One Man Circus: For all ages, but children must be accompanied by an adult. The performance will feature acrobatic stunts and comedy at the Rose Creek Library, 4476 Towne Lake Parkway in Woodstock. (11 a.m. - noon)
- Nintendo Social: For adults only, bring your Switch over to the R.T. Jones Memorial Library to exchange friend codes and play games with other adult gamers. Snacks and drinks will be provided, the library is located at 116 Brown Industrial Parkway. (5:30 - 7:30 p.m.)
