Liberty Elementary School is one of only 73 schools around the world -- and one of only two in Georgia -- to recently be recognized by the nonprofit Character.org as a state 2023 School of Character.
The organization advocates for all people to become “educated, inspired and empowered to be ethical and compassionate citizens.” Its School of Character awards recognize schools and school districts that are models for excellence in teaching students to recognize positive ethical and performance character traits and develop them in themselves.

The honored schools “each have put into place initiatives that equip and empower their staff to reinforce and model a range of positive core values that will shape and form the hearts, minds, and choices of their students,” Character.org President Dr. Arthur Schwartz said.
The honor follows Liberty’s recognition in 2018 as a National School of Character and in 2017 as a State School of Character. It also has earned numerous Promising Practices awards from the organization for specific service learning projects.
“We’re deeply proud of Liberty Elementary’s dedication to promoting the importance of positive character and community service,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “We want all of our students to graduate with these values, and Liberty’s successful programs have inspired our schools and schools around the world.”
Dr. Hightower praised Principal Sandi Harrison and her team for continuing the legacy started by retired Principal Doug Knott and retired assistant principal Dr. Pam L. Green, who now serves as state coordinator for the School of Character program. The Cherokee County School Board and Dr. Hightower will recognize Liberty’s leadership team at this month’s School Board meeting.
“Thank you to everyone in the Liberty family – students and their families; teachers, support staff and administrators; volunteers and business partners – for your role in this success,” he added. “Your work truly makes a positive difference in your school and our community as a whole.”
