Here are the top five stories in Canton-Sixes today:
- A man was shot yesterday afternoon outside of a car dealership in Canton. As of Wednesday evening, police were investigating the incident at the dealership on Liberty Boulevard; a person of interest was arrested but their identity was not released. The victim was transported to the hospital and his condition and identity has not been released. (WSB Atlanta)
- A residential structure fire occurred on Tuesday around 12:59 p.m. on Breedlove Road in Cherokee County. Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services extinguished the fire at the home where the occupants were able to escape prior to their arrival. The fire is currently under investigation. - A former inmate of the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center is suing the jail, alleging a Sheriff's deputy raped her in October 2020. The lawsuit, filed on Jul. 26, claims at least six female inmates had been sexually assaulted during the plaintiff's jail time from 2019 to 2020. The plaintiff is seeking a jury trial and damages. - Northside Hospital Cherokee in Canton has been rated "exemplary" for disclosures of price transparency, according to a report released on Tuesday. The rating comes after the hospital was fined $214,320 in June by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for a violation. The hospital is only one of the 16 percent total that currently complies with the transparency rule. (Becker's Hospital Review)
- A Canton poultry processing plant could face over $110,000 in fines from the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration. On Jan. 19, Pilgrim's Pride had an ammonia leak that resulted in two employees being hospitalized while almost 50 others had to evacuate the plant. A federal workplace safety investigation found Pilgrim's Pride could have prevented the incident by following proper safety standards. (Cherokee Tribune & Ledger-News)
