  1. A Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputy reportedly shot a domestic shooting suspect outside a Canton Red Lobster on Saturday afternoon, said Canton police. The man shot was identified as 67-year-old Mark Allen. An hour beforehand, Cherokee County deputies responded to a home on Meadowbrook Lane in Woodstock, where Allen had allegedly fired several rounds. Officials pursued Allen and found him at the Red Lobster on Riverstone Parkway. A Cherokee County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said one deputy shot at Allen because he reportedly reached for a firearm as officers approached his vehicle. As of Sunday evening, Allen is at a local hospital receiving treatment for "critical injuries," and the deputy involved has been put on administrative leave during the investigation. (FOX5 Atlanta)
  2. School begins in Canton today, Aug. 1, which means the City of Canton Police Department will resume its use of speed detection devices to enforce the speed limit in certain school zones. These devices were installed last year in school zones near Cherokee High School and Hasty Elementary school, and Teasley Middle School is still in the process of installation for the same program. Officials say Canton's program will target "the most egregious speeders" who are going more than 11 miles per hour over the posted school zone speed limit. The cameras will operate from one hour before school begins until one hour after school ends on school days only. (City of Canton)
  3. Don't miss Downtown Canton First Friday, happening on Aug. 5 at 130 East Main Street from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The City is hosting a family-friendly fun night filled with live entertainment, delicious food, and exciting activities. Attendees will enjoy music by Atlanta funk and soul band Bumpin' The Mango, late-night shopping, and dining at the restaurants and food/beverage vendors set up along Main Street. There will also be a Kid's Zone, Moving Target ATL Axe Throwing, and a Cruise In. "Don't forget your chair and dancin' shoes!" writes the City in a press release. (City of Canton)
  4. Next week, the R.T. Jones Memorial Public Library will hold its next Adult Eclectics Book Club meeting. At 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 8, the group will discuss "The Last Child" by John Hart, a "multi-layered tale of broken families and deadly secrets." The Book Club will meet in the Community Room and the discussion will be moderated by Lisa Huskey. If you're interested in participating, you can click here to access the registration form. 5. As the federal government weighs its safety standards and protections for outdoor occupations, workers in Canton continue to be more at risk for dehydration, heat-related illness, and even death. Georgia does not currently have any state-wide safety standards like mandated water and shade breaks in place for farm workers, landscapers, roofers, construction workers, and other outdoor laborers. Georgia’s average temperatures from May to October have been rising over the last two decades, and heat-related illness ER admissions were up by a third across the Southeast compared to the previous three years, according to the U.S. Health and Human Services Department.
