Here are the top five stories today in Canton-Sixes:

  1. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that 67-year-old Mark Allen of Woodstock died after being shot by Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputy on Saturday, Jul. 30, in Canton. The deputy shot Allen outside a Red Lobster after pursuing Allen for a shooting domestic violence incident. (Cherokee Tribune Ledger News)
  2. Inspectors with the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) found that the uncontrolled temperature and pressure conditions on an ammonia refrigeration system contributed to the release of ammonia which hospitalized two workers in a Canton poultry processing plant on Jan. 19, 2022. If the required safety standards were followed, the employer, Pilgrim's Pride Corp., might have prevented the incident. OSHA issued nine citations for "inadequately implementing and maintaining the process safety management program for controlling anhydrous ammonia hazards in industrial refrigeration system" and proposed $110,630 in penalties.   3. On Wednesday, Jul. 29, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services promoted four firefighters at the Cherokee County Fire Training Complex in Holly Springs. Larry Stephenson Jr. and Nicholas Woodall were promoted to the rank of sergeant. Jonathan Gottfried and Barry Howell were promoted to the rank of lieutenant. (Cherokee Tribune Ledger News)
  4. On Aug. 1, the Georgia Department of Revenue released information on how to claim an embryo deduction on state taxes. According to the press release, anyone expecting a child as of Jul. 20 is able to claim embryo deduction. (The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
