Here are the top five stories in Canton-Sixes today:
- On Jul. 20, the Attorney General's Office said two more men have been arrested for allegedly trafficking 15-year-old girl, who was rescued during a Canton traffic stop. Daniel Horne and Gregory Benoit were charged with solicitation, statutory rape, and aggravated child molestation. Horne was arrested in Canton and Benoit was arrested in Brookhaven. (The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- A Cherokee County grand jury indicted Michael Moore on Jul. 20. Moore is charged with three counts of first degree homicide by vehicle, three counts of serious injury by vehicle, two counts of DUI, and one count of reckless driving for causing a fatal a crash in March that killed one woman and seriously injured two other people. Moore is being held at the Cherokee County jail without bond. (Cherokee Tribune & Ledger News)
- Yesterday, Jul. 20, a federal appeals court ruled that the previously blocked Georgia law is allowed to stand. This means Georgia's six-week abortion ban can take effect immediately. The law does include exceptions for rape, incest, and medical emergencies. (The Hill)
- Some Georgia school bus drivers have been told they have to repay unemployment money they received during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some say there is a shortage of bus drivers across the country and they transport "our most precious cargo." But the Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) said that if they owe money, it is because they were "either overpaid or received benefits to which they were not entitled." (CBS 46 News)
- The Cherokee County School District has been spotlighting volunteers who make a difference at the schools. The Dean Rusk Middle School 2022 Volunteer of the Year is Suzy Griffies. Suzy has volunteered in numerous ways and her dedication to the students is inspiring. (CCSD)
