Red Cross To Expand Mobile Outreach in Northwest Georgia This Weekend

Following devastating tornadoes in Bartow and Gordon counties this week, Red Cross priorities continue to be the feeding and sheltering of families impacted by the disaster, and the bulk distribution of emergency supplies. Dozens of Red Cross disaster responders from the Northwest Georgia and Metro Atlanta chapters are supporting the relief effort, and are joined by emergency partners from the surrounding area.

Two Red Cross shelters remained open Friday night to provide a safe refuge for people displaced from their homes, and have provided 54 overnight stays since Wednesday. The shelters, which offer cots, blankets, food, personal hygiene items, health services, and the support of caring volunteers, are located at:

The Salvation Army has partnered with the Red Cross to serve more than 500 meals in the shelters and from canteen vehicles in the community. The Red Cross is also working with the Division of Family and Children Services and with Public Health to support the shelters. 

The Red Cross will double its mobile relief efforts in the Adairsville and Calhoun communities this weekend as spontaneous volunteers rally to help with clean-up efforts. Four Emergency Response Vehicles will provide snacks, water, meals, blankets and clean-up supplies in hard-hit neighborhoods throughout the day, and at the Sonoraville High School on Saturday morning.   

(Supplies for families impacted by the disaster include Red Cross clean-up kits and items such as work gloves, trash bags and buckets.) 

Wednesday’s severe weather impacted Georgia counties across the state, causing flooding and storm damage, especially from falling trees. Red Cross chapters have also met emergency needs for shelter and other essentials for 10 families outside the northwest Georgia area.
