State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said recently Shaw Industries of Dalton has won the Georgia Department of Labor’s Commissioner’s Cup Award for workplace safety. The Commissioner’s Cup Award is considered the premier workplace safety award presented each year by the department.
Shaw Industries won the award based on its success in mastering a behavior-based safety plan, which includes participation by 17,000 employees in Georgia. The company’s management system ensured that each employee was trained to focus on personal safety. The program has resulted in a 63 percent reduction in recordable injuries. Last year, the company had 18 work sites with no injuries and two that completed more than one million work-hours with no accidents.
Deputy Labor Commissioner Melanie Stockwell of Atlanta presented the award on behalf of Commissioner Butler at the 18th-annual Georgia Safety, Health, and Environmental Conference held recently in Savannah.
There are more than 200,000 employers in Georgia, representing a wide variety of industries, including manufacturing, construction, trade, and services. Companies that provide safe workplace environments better ensure that their workforce will remain healthy and productive.
GDOL’s awards program annually recognizes the “best of the best” for achievement in workplace health and safety. Shaw Industries was one of nine companies and individuals who received awards at the conference.
