Bond Set For Cartersville Man Accused Of Murdering Stepson
Judge Scott Smith set bond at $250,000 for Gary Thomas Posey, who was charged with murder in the shooting death of his stepson.
CARTERSVILLE, GA — Bond was set Tuesday at $250,000 for Gary Thomas Posey of Cartersville, who had been accused of shooting and killing his stepson in March.
WBHF Community Radio reports that attorney Leana Ann Wade cited health risks to 73-year-old Posey — including possible paralysis from a bullet in his back and the risk of contracting COVID-19 — as reasons to release him.
Posey has been in the Bartow County Jail since a March 28 gunfight at his Cartersville home, where his stepson, Eric Wayne Martin, 50, was found dead.

According to The Atlanta Journal Constitution, his wife told a Bartow County Sheriff’s deputy that Posey entered her room when she was asleep, picked up a gun and told her “I’m going to kill that son of a (expletive).” She then heard three gunshots. Neighbors also reported hearing three or four gunshots.
Judge Scott Smith said he agreed with district attorney Rosemary Green that Posey might try to intimidate the witness if released. He added, however, that he would have to set bond because Posey already had been in jail for a month and no grand jury currently is scheduled because of the coronavirus pandemic. If released, Posey won't be allowed to contact his wife or keep firearms.
