Cartersville Man Who Shot At Officers With Stolen Gun Sentenced

A Cartersville man was sentenced after prosecutors say he used a stolen gun to shoot at officers after crashing his car.

CARTERSVILLE, GA — A 39-year-old Cartersville man was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to shooting at officers with a stolen pistol following a crash, federal prosecutors said Thursday.

U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg announced the sentencing for Shane Jacquces Barfield in connection with the Sept. 17, 2023 incident.

Prosecutors say Barfield, with a stolen gun and methamphetamine in his vehicle, lost control while driving through Cartersville. He then skidded through an intersection and crashed into the side of the road, they said.

Witnesses notified 911 and told dispatchers that Barfield walked away from his vehicle with a gun in his hand, prosecutors said.

Barfield then returned to his vehicle with the gun, and Cartersville Police responded, prosecutors said. Ignoring commands to drop the gun and leave his car, prosecutors said Barfield crossed in front of the vehicle and fired a shot.

Three officers returned fire, hitting Barfield's vehicle multiple times before arresting him.

Prosecutors said a spent 9-mm casing, a stolen pistol and methamphetamine were seized from his vehicle.

Federal authorities determined the spent casing had been discharged from the stolen gun, prosecutors said.

Barfield on May 15 entered a guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. He was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release, prosecutors said.

“Dangerous felons like Barfield forfeit the right to bear arms,” Hertzberg said in a news release. “Barfield broke the law when he possessed and discharged a stolen gun, endangering the safety of police officers and bystanders alike. Thanks to the brave, on-scene efforts of the Cartersville Police Department and subsequent collaboration with the FBI, Barfield will now serve a significant sentence in federal prison without the possibility of parole.”
