Doctor Performs Cartersville Medical Center's First Percutaneous PFO Closure
Interventional cardiologist Dr. Maxwell Prempeh performed the procedure last week.

CARTERSVILLE, GA – Dr. Maxwell Prempeh, Harbin Clinic Interventional Cardiologist on staff at Cartersville Medical Center successfully performed the hospital’s first percutaneous PFO closure procedure last week.
The surgical procedure is used for treating patients with patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD). Diagnosed by echocardiogram, an ASD or PFO consists of holes that are located in the atrial septal wall and are typically congenital, but often with symptoms not occurring until adulthood. A closure device is placed onto a catheter with deployment to the site of the hole and with the assistance of x-ray and transesophageal echocardiogram imaging.
