July 20: History of WBHF Radio

Local radio station, WBHF AM 1450, hit the airwaves in July 1946. In recognition of the 65th anniversary of WBHF radio going on the air, the Bartow History Museum welcomes Herschel Wisebram who will present the history of WBHF radio on Wednesday, July 20, at 12 p.m.

Founded by Ryan Frier, who also owned the Bartow Herald newspaper at the time, the station’s call letters came from the newspaper’s name and his initials – “Bartow Herald Frier.” The station’s first broadcasts were of primary election results, and since that time, WBHF has continued to be community minded. Its news coverage and programming includes election returns, breaking news, sports, weather, traffic alerts, and music.
