Flood Watch Issued For Far North Counties of North GA, And High Elevations

Forecasters predict as much as 2 to 3 inches of rainfall in Cherokee, Forsyth, and Bartow counties from Thursday morning to Friday morning.

CARTERSVILLE, GA – A flood watch is in effect for extreme areas of North Georgia from Thursday morning until Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters predict a wet end to the week bringing showers and isolated thunderstorms on the back of a cold front sweeping into the area Friday.

That could mean rainfall totals of between 1 and 2 inches for most of the area. But for those communities in higher elevations like Cartersville, Acworth or Cumming, rain accumulations of 3 inches or more in the higher elevations.

Counties affected by the flood watch include Floyd, Bartow, Cherokee, Forsyth, Hall and Banks, National Weather Service meteorologist Ansley Long told Patch.

And the flood watch is expected to last from 7 a.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. on Friday, although temperatures overnight aren’t expected to dip below the 40s in that timeframe, Long said.

“This is not a winter weather event,” she said.

Temperatures now are in the 50s, AccuWeather says.

Here's the latest look ahead to the weekend forecast for the Atlanta region from the National Weather Service:

Wednesday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 50. East wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 15 mph.

Thursday: Showers likely, mainly after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 70. South wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Thursday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 50. South wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent.

Friday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 1pm, then a chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 59. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.

Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 51.

Saturday Night: A 20 percent chance of rain. Partly cloudy, with a low around 34.

Sunday: A 10 percent chance of rain. Mostly sunny, with a high near 52.

Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 34.
